Matthew 21-23; John 12:1-8
I didn’t have time to create questions for this lesson, but in hindsight, after teaching this lesson today, I have this to add:
My main focus was on the John section because my class had focused on Martha and her siblings a lot over the past weeks. We began in Matt. 21 & continued until the fig object lesson at which time enough students had wandered into class that I felt comfortable then going to the heart of the lesson…John 12:1-8.
The Spirit was strong in the room as we read and re-read these verses. We looked at them from three standpoints:
1. Literary. Why did John write what he did? How did he write it?, i.e. positioning things next to one another, paranthetical comments, foreshadowing, etc.
2. Historical. What historical information adds understanding to what is written?, i.e. customs, cultural expectations and prohibitions, the amount of money spent by Mary & by Judas, etc.
3. Spiritual. What “take-home messages” can you extract from this passage that can be applied to your life? i.e., what is Jesus saying in verse 8?

If you didn’t do this already, which we did, go back to lesson 19 and read the profound testimonies both Martha & Mary give of the Savior at the raising of their brother. Now, in this light, see these sisters AND Lazarus, at this feast. How have they each grown since the first meeting in Bethany where Mary is sitting at Jesus’ feet & Martha is serving? Where are these sisters now? What has changed? What is the same? How is this significant? How does this bear upon your own life?
Remember that this is the BEGINNING of Passover. Passover is a week-long commemoration. What does it commemorate? Is this significant in light of this week’s lesson?
